CELEBRATING WOMEN THROUGH PORTRAITURE

2018 was the 150th anniversary of the groundbreaking decision to admit women into the University of London. In recognition of this event, the University commissioned Them to conceive and deliver a photographic study of women nominated by their peers for their exceptional contribution to the workings of the University today. The ‘Women of Senate House’ was published in the University of London magazine WC1E and was on display during 2019 in London’s historic Senate House.

Ten remarkable women were selected by their peers and featured in a series of formal portraits shot and conceived by Laurie and Fi. The pictures featured a broad range of women contextualised within the grandeur of Senate House.

The project went to win a prestigious CASE Award. The CASE judges said of the work, “Our panel fell for these formal portraits from the University of London. The women are shot using formal principles in traditional environments of power. One comment was about how these women had been photographed “like men” with the body language of gravitas and reverence. Refreshing to see women photographed with a sense of their substance and wisdom.”
